Lymphatic Drainage
What is the Lymph System?
It is sometimes called the ‘White Bloodstream’. Lymph vessels are distributed around the body in much the same way as the blood vessels. In certain parts of the body, such as neck and under the arms, there are clusters of lymph nodes where the lymphatic fluid (lymph) flows in and out. The nodes are where the filtering and cleansing of the lymph takes place. The body’s natural defence system against invasive bacteria and viruses, the lymphocytes, phagocytes, etc, are manufactured and stored here.
As well as defence, the lymph also helps to regulate the level of fluids in the tissues, the blood fluid, and the cerebro-spinal fluid.
The lymph absorbs fat and passes it in small quantities into the blood stream.
All organs and tissues in the body are nourished and drained by the lymphatic system.
What happens when it goes wrong?
When it is not functioning properly there may be oedema, congestion and discomfort.
Some disorders of the heart, the kidneys and the blood vessels may be caused by a breakdown in the function of the lymphatic system.
