Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a state of deep relaxation achieved by interaction between the hypno-therapist and client.
The therapist enables the client to relax their conscious mind so that they become aware of their inner feelings and thoughts. The client is in a state that is not sleep or a meditative condition. It is a state of awareness that gives access to the theta brain-waves.  Theta waves are known to be associated with behavioural patterns connected to healing, part of the integration of mind and body.  Hypnotherapy can induce the trance-like, theta wave state.  It is a very positive mental state.

Whilst in a state of induced deep relaxation, therapeutic suggestions are offered to help let go of negative thoughts, feelings and actions. Suggestions are then offered that give the choice of replacing them with positive and beneficial alternatives.

There are two types of hypno-therapy offered;

  • Interactive hypnotherapy; the therapist and client work together to encourage positive change.
Self-esteem and confidence can be fostered, using imagery or visualisation, as part of pre-agreed suggestion and encouragement, whilst in that induced state of deep relaxation.

  • Direct suggestion; therapist uses direct suggestions with the aim of giving up smoking, weight loss etc, whilst the client is in an induced state of deep relaxation.

The induced relaxation of the conscious mind allows access to the subconscious and propositions are made that may help to effect the changes that the client wants to achieve.  The therapist cannot induce this state, the client will only enter hypnosis if they allow and wish it.

What can it help with?

By assisting in the recognition and control of undesirable characteristics in oneself,
it can be a form of life-coaching:

  • Lack of confidence and self esteem
  • Anxiousness and panic attacks
  • Controlling or getting rid of a particular fear
  • Moving on from not believing that you can succeed
  • Preparing to give a speech, for an interview, a driving test or another such specific challenge

It can also be instrumental in helping to achieving long-standing goals, such as:

  • give up smoking or losing weight
  • gaining weight    or    stop biting your nails

As part of the treatment, you may feel that you wish to relive a past event that was traumatic some way or other.  You will not automatically do this under hypnosis. If it is appropriate and you feel the need to do this, then the therapist may be able to help you return to that time and event.  This time you will be in control of the event so that you can rationalise and repair a trauma that has caused distress in the past.

At no time will you lose control of any situation, you will be aware of, and remember, all that has gone on. Neither will you be asked to do anything or act in any way that you would not normally do.  You are unlikely to reveal any secrets that you would not want known. You will be able to stop treatment at any point should you feel unsafe or just want to stop. When the session is over you will be fully aware and able to discuss over with your therapist what has occurred and what you want from future sessions.

Is it Safe?

The treatment itself is considered safe although as with all therapies certain contra-indications can exist. Therefore hypnotherapy may not be suitable for all patients, Rosemary will, of course, advise you if this is the case and suggest other treatments.
